What is SEO?

SEO Services by Daniel Wahlstrand, SEO Specialist in Wisconsin

SEO is the process of increasing traffic to your website by increasing its rank in search engine results.

Why is SEO Important?

SEO is a crucial part of your digital marketing efforts because solely having a website is not enough. Not unless you have prior knowledge & experience with the algorithms & techniques that search engines use to index your content.

Popular search engines include: Google, Bing & DuckDuckGo.

These major search engines rate you on many levels including, but not limited to: the quality & quantity of your content, the accuracy of the information architecture, validation of HTML code, how trustworthy your domain is, how many other websites link to you, locale, and social media presence. Each search engine ranks your website for these elements differently.

I've met a good amount of business owners in Wisconsin whom are still under the decades-old assumption that having a website is good enough. This is not even remotely true. In stark contrast, popular websites that already garner tons of Web traffic will see even better results upon having proper SEO performed. It's all about visibility!

I have extensive experience taking businesses to new heights by implementing tried-and-true SEO measures that search engines will pick up on and begin to rank you for. Proper SEO makes a website the best marketing tool a business can have.

On-Page SEO

On-Page SEO is quite in-depth with many different factors that need to be considered. Here's a gist of what I look at:

Quality, engaging & unique content is the goal.

Here the main focus is on keyword research & implementation - finding and using the keywords & phrases people are actually searching for.

Additional Factors

  • How often is new content created?
  • Is your content is thin or lacking substance?
  • Readability - Is your content written according your audience's reading level?

Information Architecture looks at the layout and coordination of content on the page.

  • Are your web pages being indexed?
  • Can your website display properly on mobile devices?
  • Do you have duplicate content?
  • How fast does your website load on broadband & mobile connections?
  • Do the URLs properly convey the content on the page? Are any URLs broken?
  • Is your website secure?

This is the technical side of SEO and deals with specific HTML elements that give off ranking signs to search engines. Here I will inspect:

  • Title Tag - The bold-faced part of any given search result.
  • Description tags - The descriptive text below the title in search results.
  • Structured Data - Does the website take advantage of micro data?
  • Header tags - Are the headers of each section properly labeled?

Off-Page SEO

Off-Page SEO is also very in-depth with many elements that need to be considered. Here's a gist of what I look at:

Google looks at things like your authority (backlinks, social shares, etc.), engagement (how long people visit your site), and history (how long your domain as been around) to determine your page's trust index. If you have risqué links or shares, if people leave your site quickly, or if your website is brand new, the more negative your trust index is.

Backlinks are part of the the trust index, but also important enough to be their own ranking factor. Google looks at the reputation of these backlinks, the keywords found within, and how many of them you have. Next to having quality content that people enjoy, creating backlinks is the most important aspect of SEO.

Google needs to know your locale information in order to promote your website more efficiently to people within the proximity. This includes the city, state/province, and the country you're in. Another factor is how many people from your locale frequent your website?

Using social media isn't a direct way for your to increase your search rank, but it's a great tool for local marketing and driving traffic. There are two factors Google does pay some attention to: 1) The reputation of the accounts sharing your content & 2) How many times is your content being shared.

Local SEO

Local SEO looks at your immediate, direct locale for ways to get your content in front of people looking for products like your own.
